One of the most challenging tasks a principal must accomplish every year is the construction of the master schedule. Free from the magnetic scheduling boards and wall charts of yesteryear, principals now have technological tools--such as programs that offer schools solutions for their scheduling needs--that can save time and enable them to work more efficiently to accomplish this daunting task. This article describes one high school which allows students to make their own course selections. Quaker Valley High School in suburban Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, experiments with a manual scheduling format commonly known as "arena" or college-style scheduling. Basically, an arena-scheduling system works as follows: A master schedule of courses is predetermined and distributed to all students. Then the students are given time to review the master schedule and create their own scheduling plan for the upcoming school year. The students are invited to an "arena" or scheduling center to make their course selections, thus creating handmade schedules that they finalize before the end of the current school year. This scheduling system has cut down on complaints and course change requests and has taught students to make hard choices and be responsible for the consequences.
