Transitions are the "interval between any two activities." Therefore, transitions occur between classes (before and after a class) and within class periods (between activities). Using transition time effectively is a cost-free way of maximizing instructional time. Therefore, it becomes imperative that transitions occur smoothly throughout the school year to promote student learning and teaching effectiveness. Students take their cues about transitions from their teachers, and such instruction begins at the start of the school year. This article presents scenarios from the first day of school which illustrate how teachers taught transition skills to their students.
