Kaleidoscope
Faux, Geoff
Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, n206 p19-21 Jan 2008
When the author started his visualization session at Brampton by showing a still from Kate Mackrell's "Kaleidoscope," he was immediately struck by one student's description of a symmetry and reflection line that was quite at odds with what he was holding. Since he had seen the whole thing moving on a number of occasions, the author was hanging on to the mirrors he knew about and not the bisectors of the angles "between" two mirrors. He learned that there are other ways of seeing using "kaleidoscope" with Year 7 students. Here, he demonstrates how the students constructed their own kaleidoscopes and describes the students' response to looking at kaleidoscope images. (Contains 7 figures and 3 notes.)
