Multicultural Diversity: Learning through the Arts
Wesley, Sherre
New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n116 p13-23 Win 2007
Through the arts, people holistically learn, interact with greater multicultural diversity than elsewhere, and form connections with others. Participating in the arts gives adults experiences, contexts, and tools to help them reexperience, revision, and reconceptualize multicultural diversity in their lives and communities. To illustrate aspects of the role of the arts in adult learning about multicultural diversity, the author recounts the experiences of adults who took part in a study she did of participants in small and midsized arts programs of all disciplines in a community in the Northeastern United States. The adults in the study were, in equal numbers, people of color and whites, and people who participated through creating and through attending or organizing the arts. This article focuses on race and ethnicity as primary dimensions of diversity. In exploring how arts participation can assist adults in learning about multicultural diversity, this article discusses: (1) The learning space the arts create; (2) multiple ways of learning with the arts; and (3) ideas and suggestions as to how adult educators can apply lessons learned and make greater use of the arts in their practice.
