A National Picture of Part-Time Community College Faculty: Changing Trends in Demographics and Employment Characteristics
Eagan, Kevin
New Directions for Community Colleges, n140 p5-14 Win 2007
Although part-time faculty continue to dominate the instructional workforce of community colleges, relatively little is known about this diverse group of individuals. Part-timers are often portrayed as being "free-way flyers" who constantly seek full-time appointments in postsecondary education institutions. However, as this article demonstrates, only a small proportion of part-time faculty have more than one academic appointment at a postsecondary education institutions. Drawing from the four most recent administrations of the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF), this article illustrates trends in the composition of part-time community college faculty as well as changes in their attitudes and beliefs across time. In addition, this article provides a descriptive analysis of the demographic, employment, and attitudinal similarities and differences found among part- and full-time faculty at community colleges.
