Visualising Geometry
Ball, Barbara; Ball, Derek
Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, n205 p4-5 Nov 2007
As a result of attending a course on moving images, the authors consider the balance between visualising and verbalising geometry. In thinking about the balance between visualising and verbalising (and verbal reasoning), the authors began to appreciate more than before that geometric visualisation is greatly aided by what they know--if everyone knows that the angle in a semicircle is a right angle then that is what they see--they do not need to pay much attention to it, although they might be invited to pay attention to the consequences of the right angle--whereas if what is being manifested is a property that is unfamiliar, then a great deal of attention is required.
