Healthy and Smart: Using Wellness to Boost Performance
Jones, David
Principal Leadership, v8 n4 p32-36 Dec 2007
When a survey of students at Eisenhower Middle School in Everett, Washington indicated that they spent a good part of the school day feeling tired and hungry, that they felt unsafe in some areas of the school, and that worn-down facilities left many of them feeling depressed, the author and his staff concluded that, in order to improve the students' academic progress, they needed to control, or at least exert a strong influence over, the many variables that affect student success. They focused on wellness, identifying the following priorities: (1) improving staff member wellness; (2) increasing student fitness; and (3) enhancing the nutritional value of foods and beverages served on campus. This article describes the planning and implementation process and discusses the results.
