Trimming the Fat in America's Schools: Where Are We One Year Following Implementation of Federally Mandated Local School Wellness Plans (LSWPs)?
Curriculum Review, v47 n3 p14 Nov 2007
This article presents the results of a survey by the School Nutrition Association (SNA) on the year-long adoption of wellness policies of 15,000 local schools nationwide. Released September 5, SNA's "From Cupcakes to Carrots: Local Wellness Policies One Year Later" was compiled from a survey of 976 school nutrition directors conducted in May 2007. The SNA report tracks implementation progress of wellness policy topics including nutrition education, physical activity and nutrition guidelines. The report found that of the 97 percent of school districts that addressed nutrition standards for National School Lunch Program meals in their wellness policies, 92 percent have completed implementation. The results indicate that implementation has been challenging regarding policies covering food and beverages outside of the school nutrition program. However, over 83 percent of survey respondents observed increased healthful food options in the cafeteria due to policy implementation, and nearly half indicated changes in the healthy choices.
