Forgotten Millions: A Case of Cultural and Systemic Bias
Alur, Mithu
Support for Learning, v22 n4 p174-180 Nov 2007
In this article the author discusses concepts of exclusion and inclusion and how important it is to understand exclusionary practices in the context and culture specificity of each region to attempt to remove barriers to inclusive education. She specifically discusses the low status given to girls and women in the Indian culture and how this affects their education. Besides the socio-cultural mores that she describes she argues that a major barrier can be institutionalized systems with entrenched laws that need changing. The author concludes with the argument that "a right to education missing from any system" is critical to address to avoid hidden issues that become entrenched and accepted as barriers to an inclusive system.
