The Business Education Curriculum
Rader, Martha; Meggison, Peter
Delta Pi Epsilon Journal, v49 n1 p26-31 Win 2007
The business education curriculum encompasses the educational experiences of business students at all levels. Business education curricula include a variety of programs, courses, units, course objectives, student competencies, assessments, and extracurricular activities that have evolved over the years. Curricula are driven by numerous internal and external factors such as technological change, state and national legislation, state and national standards, funding, business and industry support, globalization, accreditation agencies, licensure/certification requirements, and local stakeholders. The "National Standards for Business Education" (2007) curriculum model describes business education at the following four levels: the elementary level (Grades K-6), middle school/junior high (Grades 6-9), secondary (Grades 9-12), and two-year postsecondary/community or technical college. The National Business Education Association (NBEA) curriculum standards do not address undergraduate or graduate-level business education curricula at four-year colleges and universities. In this article, the authors focus on issues in the business education curriculum at the three institutional levels where it is most prevalent in today's education system and where the field is expected to exist in the future: secondary, community college, and four-year college/university. They also discuss implications and present recommendations for curriculum reform.
