The author of this paper, an ethicist, states that he considers himself fortunate to be in a field undergoing a resurgence; however he also is aware of how academic efforts to promote moral development often lack a deep appreciation of the underlying character of ethics. He argues that, in order to further the moral maturation of today's students, colleges and universities must begin by cultivating richer relationships among individuals on their own campuses, specifically what he terms "ennobling relationships" as opposed to "enabling relationships." The author describes three connections that he considers essential to the development of ethical understanding and commitment in students: (1) connections among different disciplinary perspectives on the nature of ethics; (2) connections between the theory and practice of ethics; and (3) connections that give rise to mentorship. Bringing ennobling relationships to these three connections, he contends, will enable a more fruitful commitment to the moral lives of students. (Contains 2 resources.)
