Patrick Jones, winner of the 2006 Scholastic Library Publishing Award (formerly known as the Grolier Foundation Award), is 44--seemingly too young to receive what is, after all, a lifetime achievement award. Given annually to a librarian "who has made extraordinary contributions that promote access to books, encourage a love of reading for lifelong learning, and exemplify outstanding achievement in the profession," Jones has done all that and more. In addition to the many teens he has influenced, he's defined what it means to he a young adult (YA) librarian with the publication of "Connecting Young Adult and Libraries: A How-To-Do-lt Manual" (Neal-Schitman, 1992), and then spent part of the last 14 years "on tour," challenging a new generation of librarians to develop a "YAttitude" and think about teen services in a fresh way. This article presents an interview with Jones, now the outreach coordinator at the Hennepin County (MN) Library. Jones talks about about his iconoclastic career, the current state of YA services, and his future plans.
