National and statewide research indicates that there is a special role for schools in preparing youth to become active, engaged participants in a democratic society. Unlike many of the roles that schools have assumed, this is not a new role; it is a role that was envisioned by the founding fathers. The results of several national studies strongly recommend several simple strategies for schools and teachers to use when preparing students to be responsible, contributing members of society: (1) Build on youth interest in service; (2) Reach out to diverse youth; (3) Connect curricula to relevant issues; and (4) Reach out to parents. Children deserve to be well prepared to participate in a democratic society, especially when so many vital aspects of the future depend upon it--from economic vitality to public support of schools to strong communities. With the help of teachers, administrators, and school leaders, schools are poised to resume their civic mission. (Contains 2 charts.)
