Social Class and Belonging: Implications for College Adjustment
Ostrove, Joan M.; Long, Susan M.
Review of Higher Education, v30 n4 p363-389 Sum 2007
This study addressed the extent to which social class position structures a sense of belonging at college, and the ways in which belonging informs adjustment to college. Among 322 liberal arts college students, social class background was significantly associated with a sense of belonging at college and was marginally related to academic performance but was not related to the quality of the experience they were having at college. Sense of belonging mediated the relationship between class background and adjustment to college. (Contains 5 tables and 1 footnote.)
