Inciting Interest in the Newbery Award Books
Hegel, Claudette
Library Media Connection, v26 n1 p32-33 Aug-Sep 2007
Hearing some fun facts about books and authors can bring books to life and help ignite students' interest in books and reading. Because most elementary school media centers and public libraries have many of the Newbery Medal books, students will have a better chance of finding books they decide they want to read once they hear about them. Reading the Newbery fun facts in this article to students and asking the included questions--and additional questions that coincide with whatever the students are studying at the time or questions from the students themselves--can provide a springboard to further discussion about books and can lead readers and non-readers alike to seek the quality Newbery Books.
