Cartography and Adoption: Identity and Difference beyond the Politics of the Comfort Zone
Marinara, Martha
Review of Education, Pedagogy & Cultural Studies, v25 n2 p139-152 Apr 2003
When composition instructors discuss teaching diversity, the concept of tolerance often takes over the conversation. Tolerance constructs an ideal "comfort zone" where every student's voice can be heard and respected. While tolerance is perceived as an admirable goal, Marinara has concluded that the ideal of the comfortable classroom space from which students can speak comes with a high price tag, that it may, in fact, serve to construct more blind spots and exclusions. She believes instead that it is critical for teaching practice to be informed by the interpretation of difference, and for composition instructors to question the dynamics and possibilities for social change in the classroom and in life.
