Men's Perceptions of Their Experiences as K-2 Teachers

This article describes an investigation of the career-related experiences of 73 male K-2 teachers from across Nevada. Data were acquired and are discussed in three main categories: (1) perceived factors influencing men's initial choice to become a K-2 teacher; (2) perceived factors impacting men's present level of enjoyment in being a K-2 teacher; and (3) perceived potential stereotypes or drawbacks related to being a male K-2 teacher. Several secondary topics, such as the men's future career goals and general issues of recruitment and retention, are discussed briefly. The research indicates that male teachers of very young children bear similarities to those in earlier studies in terms of demographic descriptors and selected feelings and thoughts about their positions (e.g., a desire to provide male role models and enjoyment of working with children). However, the men in this research--K-2 teachers from across Nevada--did not tend to share the concerns about potential job-related stereotypes and negative factors that appear in other literature regarding the experiences of male teachers of young children.
