Assessment Traps in K-12 Social Studies
Pahl, Ronald H.
Social Studies, v94 n5 p212-215 Sep-Oct 2003
In this article, the author takes a critical look at current assessment practices in social studies education, especially those at the state level. He defines some key assessment terms, then considers the major issues of statewide assessment, focusing on the reliability and validity of the means by which government agencies across the United States believe they are "improving educational achievement." He discusses the often-ignored equity issues of statewide assessment and suggests alternatives that can lead to genuine improvements in education.
