Community Resource Mapping--An Exciting Tool for Decision Making in the Social Studies Classroom
Munoz, Juan S.
Social Studies, v94 n1 p20-22 Jan-Feb 2003
In this article, the author describes "community/resource mapping," an activity in which students intellectually engage problems, mine the terrain of their social conditions for solutions, and exercise and accept responsibility for the burden of decision making. The activity, which was developed for use in the public policy sector, can be an exciting tool with which to develop social studies students' decision-making capabilities. Community and resource mapping is the process of collecting information about a specific geographic area or a defined community and then making a decision that is based on the goals of the mapping exercise. Students make an action-oriented decision after considering the newly acquired information and insights about the community. The activity offers secondary teachers and students a multifaceted exercise that addresses the process and properties of developing decision-making abilities.
