Moving Away from a Quick-Fix Mentality to Systematic Professional Development
Albrecht, Kay M.; Engel, Bev
Young Children, v62 n4 p18-25 Jul 2007
There are many ways to move the field toward greater professionalization. In this article, the authors present some ideas that are macro in focus--designed to move the whole field toward consensus and action--and some ideas that are micro, focused on suggested actions for early childhood programs operating throughout the country and around the world and searching for pathways to participate in this professionalization. Later, the authors present advocacy goals for furthering the professionalization agenda at local, state, and national levels. The foundational steps that are necessary to ensure effective forward progress toward professionalization are: (1) Expect all early childhood educators to be lifelong learners; and (2) Understand the resistance to change.
