Maple Graphing Tools for Calculus III
Cook, Darwyn
Mathematics and Computer Education, v40 n1 p36-41 Win 2006
For those instructors lacking artistic skills, teaching 3-dimensional calculus can be a challenge. Although some instructors spend a great deal of time working on their illustrations, trying to get them just right, students nevertheless often have a difficult time understanding some of them. To address this problem, the author has written a series of "Maple" functions that handle the essential plots. After a demonstration of their effectiveness, his colleagues began using them and expanded their use to include classroom projects. Given this success, the next logical step is to share them with others. The primary purpose of this article is to make the mathematics community aware of their existence and availability. All of the functions discussed in this article were written in "Maple 5," but also have been used in "Maple 9." The functions are written to return a 3-dimensional plot object, so that the output of the plots can be combined easily with other plots using the display command. This article also includes examples of the eight functions in "calcIIIplots." (Contains 8 figures and 1 footnote.)
