High-Tech: Help or Hindrance to Hispanics in College?
Mellander, Gustavo A.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v72 n9 p19-23 May 2007
The effect of an inability to purchase computers for home use and a lack of computers and instruction at public schools has had on the ability of Hispanic students to develop technology skills related to computer and Internet use is discussed. This article asks if the nation's emphasis on technology in schools has hindered Hispanic access to higher education and their chances for success? Ronald Phipps, of the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative, addressed this in his "How Does Technology Affect Access in Post-secondary Education? What Do We Really Know?" He explored four themes. In this article, the author discusses the major highlights within those themes. These include: (1) Access to postsecondary education; (2) Access to technology-based learning; (3) Preparation for using technology; and (4) Effectiveness of technology in the learning process. A discussion of the role computers have played in allowing college students to participate in distance learning programs is also presented.
