Nagy, Mary Lou
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v72 n2 p14-18 Oct 2006
All advisers have many concerns and stresses that are unique to their situation. Even though they love their jobs, burnout can creep up without announcing its arrival. Possible signs of burnout may include irritability with students, avoiding responsibility, working harder and getting less done, feeling discouraged and indifferent, showing resistance to change, feeling a sense of failure when everything is fine, avoiding discussions, postponing meetings, inability to concentrate, and apathy. In this article, the author relates how she coped with burnout and provides several strategies which may be of use for adviser burnout.
