Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision--The Science of Making Learning Fun
Heller, Linda
Tech Directions, v64 n4 p24-25 Nov 2004
It may be true that students are born with an innate interest in science and technology. However, teachers say many students do not sustain that interest through their school years. In this article, the author describes the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision program. One of the world's largest K-12 science and technology competitions, ExploraVision is a fun and exciting way for kids to roll up their sleeves and explore the wonders of science and technology and the world around them. The competition, in which students work in teams to envision technologies that could exist in 20 years, began in 1993. Since then more than 180,000 students have participated. By tapping into student's imaginations and creativity, ExploraVision helps build confidence and critical-thinking skills, while providing an opportunity for young people to gain real experience in scientific research. Many ExploraVision students get their project ideas from looking at the world around them, identifying a problem, and envisioning a way to remedy it. Often, the students' research leads them to new discoveries.
