Centering Objects in the Workspace
Free, Cory
Tech Directions, v65 n3 p26-27 Oct 2005
Drafters must be detail-oriented people. The objects they draw are interpreted and then built with the extreme precision required by today's manufacturers. Now that computer-aided drafting (CAD) has taken over the drafting profession, anything less than exact precision is unacceptable. In her drafting classes, the author expects her students to lay out the objects they draw with the same exacting measurements they used to draw the objects in the first place. For years, she had trouble explaining how to center objects on a piece of paper. As a solution, she decided to give students a formula for centering the objects they draw on a piece of paper. In abbreviated form, she calls the formula MFFFCOW, which stands for "Mr. Free's Formula for Centering Objects in the Workspace." Although there really is nothing new about the math or the method, the name seems to help her students remember the formula. (Contains 2 figures.)
