Emergence of Themes and Issues in Development and Research
Jaworski, Barbara
Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, n200 p12-15 Jan 2007
In this article, the author discusses the use of stories from the classroom to promote development in learning and teaching through inquiry communities and the "Develop your Teaching" (Dyt) approach. Sharing classroom stories, or "anecdoting," leads to a synthesizing of issues, providing starting points for professional development activity. One importance of the anecdoting process is its collaborative and supportive nature, which helps sustain activity through pressures on individuals. The DyT approach encourages the use of stories that challenge teachers to consider how they interpret students' mathematical activity in relation to a curriculum they follow as teachers. DyT emphasizes the importance of collaboration in becoming aware of issues through the structured approach. The history of the DyT program's development and the current success of the program are described. (Contains 2 notes.)
