Keeping Your Balance
Schor, Marie
Principal Leadership, v7 n8 p31-33 Apr 2007
Being in balance is vital to a healthy school environment and may make schools more productive. However, being in balance is hard to define. It may be easier to start by identifying what "out" of balance looks like. All administrators have had days when they have felt that their efforts were for naught. The phone keeps ringing, the parents are unhappy, the classroom observations are backing up, and there are meetings to attend that seem unproductive at best. On such days, administrators may leave their offices feeling that they have made a seriously wrong decision when they took their current job. Perhaps they even consider applying to that school district that just posted a position for a new principal, just to get away from the craziness. In lieu of jumping ship, however, here are a few tips to help get administrators back in balance: (1) Evaluate your organization systems; (2) Your health is very important; (3) Set your boundaries; and (4) Take nothing personally.
