School administrators, eager to raise student achievement levels to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act, are increasingly looking to staff development as a means to enhance student achievement. In this article, the author describes how Mountain View Alternative High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, an alternative high school with a highly diverse student body, developed its own very successful staff development program. From its inception, the program was designed and led by teachers. To identify their staff development needs, teachers at Mountain View filled out an online survey. Teachers were asked to join a small group to focus on professional development in one of six areas that they had identified in the survey. Groups met at least once a month during the school year and used an online computer program to communicate.
