Winters Mill High School is a typical comprehensive high school in most respects. Situated within the city of Westminster, Maryland, the school opened its doors to students in grades 9 and 10 in the fall of 2002. Historically, the Westminster area has had an agrarian culture that has coexisted comfortably with merchants and the McDaniel College community. In the last decade, however, the area has received a large influx of families from urban and suburban areas around Baltimore and Washington, DC. Although the shift in character has been generally smooth, some people have complained that the growth has introduced new social problems. However, the school certainly has not faced the issues that plague the most challenged urban and suburban schools. This is because the school has created an advisory program to promote rigor, relevance, and relationships. In this article, the authors discuss how this advisory program works at Winters Mill High School. (Contains 1 figure.)
