More than a Disciplinarian
Gerke, Wayne
Principal Leadership, v5 n3 p39-41 Nov 2004
Assistant principals are in a precarious position. Although assistant principals are relied on to take over when the principal is out of the building, they are often viewed simply as disciplinarians. To change this perception, the author has learned that he needs to pave his own way by implementing activities and procedures that let others know that he is an autonomous and capable administrator. Following four procedures and practices--being an instructional leader, improving student contact, being efficient, and planning ahead--have helped him obtain a reputation as a solid administrator in all the various subcategories of his job. Although none of these practices are rocket science, they have been important in letting people know that he is more than just a disciplinarian. (Contains 1 figure.)
