Principal Leadership, v4 n9 p40-43 May 2004
All educators are very concerned about the tremendous need for new principals. Different strategies are in place to fill vacancies in the principalship. Principals can be developed from the existing ranks of educators, hired from outside the field, or through a combination of both. To meet their immediate needs, however, most school districts want to grow their own principals. In this article, the author discusses the benefits of a grow-your-own program in developing new principals. The program empowers assistant principals by making them house leaders. House leaders have the same authority and responsibility as the principal, but in a support system that facilitates their learning and success. In this model, assistant principals will be prepared to be excellent principals, because they have already had experience being house leaders.
