Lessons Learned, Wisdom Earned
Shindel, Melissa Luroe
Principal Leadership, v4 n9 p32-35 May 2004
As the end of the 2002-2003 school year drew near, the author began to reflect on her first year as a vice principal. Her first year had been exciting and adventurous, although it started quite differently from most: she had the opportunity of opening a brand new school while working under the outstanding leadership of Marian White-Hood, the principal who gave her her first job as a teacher several years ago. It had been an excellent year for her professionally, personally, and intellectually. She had learned an enormous amount, anticipated the end of a successful year, and looked forward to planning and preparing for the start of a new year in the fall. As she thought of the many lessons she had learned, she also pondered the techniques that were used to shape her leadership during the year. Here, the author shares three techniques that have proven to be most effective: (1) lead by example; (2) do the little things; and (3) let people grow.
