Who Is Learning?
Beers, Barry
Principal Leadership, v4 n9 p28-33 May 2004
In this article, the author shares some findings from his classroom observations. He has found that, in the typical classroom, a small group of students answers many questions and as much as half of the class answers no questions at all. One problem with such a response pattern is that teachers often decide how well the lesson is going from the responses they get from only a few students. After deciding to observe this pattern from the student's perspective, he increased his observations of student behaviors in the classroom and has identified four categories of student behaviors: wanderers, watchers, workers, and learners. He summarizes his new observations as follows: (1) When students are wandering, learning is unlikely; (2) When students are watching, learning is possible; and (3) When students are working, learning is probable. As such, the goal of a teacher is to have as many students in the working and learning categories as possible, and the goal of the administrator is to keep teachers mindful of this priority. The author also suggests several strategies for refining teaching to engage more students. (Contains 2 figures.)
