Veteran Advice for New Principals
Krajewski, Bob; Conner, Nancy; Murray, Vincent; Williams, Claudia
Principal Leadership, v4 n9 p19-24 May 2004
A recent survey found that 67% of principals believe that school of education leadership programs are out of touch with what it takes to run a school district. Only 4% praise their graduate studies, and a majority say that mentoring and guidance from people they work with has the greatest benefit for them. In this article, the author asked three veteran high school leaders to share their thoughts, successes, and frustrations, and offer advice to principals and aspiring principals. He then concluded that principals must be visionaries who know how to get people to collaborate and share in forming a vision and a common goal. The trick is getting people to do what it takes to make the vision become reality. Along with that, a principal must apply pressure and nurture support to get a job done--and know how to balance that pressure and support. (Contains 2 figures.)
