A Personal Prescription for Engagement
Clarke, John; DiMartino, Joseph
Principal Leadership, v4 n8 p19-23 Apr 2004
Engagement has become the hallmark of personalized learning. When students are engaged in learning, they actively apply what they know and search for ways to know more. Two years ago, researchers from the Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory, a program of the Education Alliance at Brown University, began a study to identify events that engage students in learning. The study was designed to deepen the authors' understanding of personalization by observing specific instances in which high school students were engaged during a normal school day. In this article, the authors present the findings of the study, which shadowed 24 students in New England high schools and indicated that the following practices, which promote personalized learning, are key: (1) recognition; (2) acceptance; (3) trust; (4) respect; (5) purpose; and (6) confirmation. In addition, they found that the principal is the only professional who is able to influence all aspects of the school community that affect personalization: learning, advising and mentoring, teaching, curriculum, systems and leadership, and learning community. While it is true that there is no one "recipe" for personalization, the prospects for personalization in high schools are good for schools in which the principal and other staff are fully invested in change.
