Taking the High Road
Bond, Suzanne S.
Principal Leadership, v4 n8 p14-18 Apr 2004
What is the foundation of your school's operation? Identifying and articulating the basic operating principles can create a foundation of trust and cooperation. In this article, the author draws from her experience as a principal on how to identify and organize a school's operating principles. The recommended method of developing operating principles is a process that takes time and patience. It requires full involvement and open dialogue over time. To do this, involve everyone in the school in identifying the principles that guide how people treat one another and work together. Ensure that the principles are distributed at orientation and school meetings. Share the principles with candidates during job interviews to get their reactions and generate enthusiasm. Remember that operating principles are best if they are positive, general principles that will become the basis for how educators operate and how they treat one another in the organization. These principles will lead to a high level of functioning, create positive and supportive relationships, and promote a healthy learning community for all. They will serve as a guide to everyone to take the high road whenever possible and especially when times are tough.
