The Warm Body in the Math Class
Lederer, Eric
Principal Leadership, v4 n7 p50-54 Mar 2004
There are more math classes than there are math teachers to teach them. School administrators often decide how to cover such classes by selecting a person from a pool of other teachers, counselors, and administrators. This can inhibit student progress in math because an appointed math teacher cannot do the job as well as a real math teacher. However, knowing how qualified each member of the selection pool is can help principals make the best possible decision. To address this challenge, the author suggests that principals should create a pool of candidates by asking specific questions to gauge their interest and experience and give interested candidates a basic math test to determine their level of knowledge.
