Using Electronic Journals to Facilitate Reflective Thinking Regarding Instructional Practices during Early Field Experiences
Meyers, Eldon, Jr.
Education, v126 n4 p756-762 Sum 2006
Loras College recently became a laptop campus. Faculty members in the Division of Education viewed the transformation of the college learning environment as an opportunity to enhance the elementary education teacher preparation program. There was a desire to make productive use of the improved technology available and the early field experience components could be provided on overall "purpose" beyond completing isolated exercises for separate methods courses assignments and in turn, facilitate cohesiveness, additional instructional opportunities, and direction. This paper discusses how Loras College's teacher education program has incorporated the use of computer technology in a way that provides a focus for early field experiences. This paper also explains how electronic weekly journals can create additional instructional opportunities for college supervisors while affording pre-service teachers a learning experience that encourages reflective thinking concerning the factors that can contribute to teaching effectiveness in the elementary classroom.
