The A-Maizing Corn Lab: A Geneticist's Biography Leads a Mathematics Exploration
Cwikla, Julie; Patterson, Marcelle Dessommes
Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, v11 n9 p421-427 May 2006
This article describes an innovative lesson that uses the biography "Barbara McClintock: Alone in her Field" (Heiligman, 1994) to integrate genetics, literature, and mathematics as a context for students to investigate patterns on Indian corn. This two-day lesson requires students to estimate, collect data, identify and describe patterns, represent their data using bar graphs, use Punnett squares, and investigate probability.
