Finding Art in the Science Room
Coy, Mary
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v106 n7 p29 Mar 2007
This article briefly highlights a unique project given to seventh grade students in a science class. To foster appreciation for the wonders of nature, teacher John Golden asks students to collect a variety of materials--from leaves and branches to pine cones and seed pods--and create a sculptural arrangement reflecting nature's beauty. Materials are plentiful and easy to find since parks, fields, woods, and even one's own backyard contains treasures. A log or flat piece of wood serves as a base on to which the objects are glued with hot glue guns or white glue. Although the students think they are completing a science project, the results are as much a demonstration of the elements and principles of art and design as they are homage to nature.
