Advocates Take Message to Capitol Hill
Magnuson, Peter
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers (J3), v82 n5 p34-37 May 2007
In March 2007, more than 400 educators came to Washington, D.C., to show their support and advocate for career and technical education (CTE) as a part of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) National Policy Seminar (NPS). Attendees heard from speakers such as Troy Justesen and Jeffrey Birnbaum, learned about the research-policy connection, learned the latest on Perkins implementation, and got the first glimpse of ACTE's policy paper on postsecondary education. The first day of NPS laid the groundwork for the Hill visits attendees had scheduled for the following two days. Attendees at these sessions got information on working with the media, an update on the relevant issues, and some background on the upcoming election season. The annual ACTE Issues Briefing is one of the most popular NPS sessions. During this time, ACTE's public policy staff provides attendees with the most up-to-date information on legislative initiatives affecting CTE programs. This year's session focused on such topics as Perkins implementation and No Child Left Behind. The information provided during this session enables attendees to get a better understanding of what is occurring on Capitol Hill and how best to frame their discussions with their legislators. The second day of NPS focused on a number of sessions to help career and technical educators understand the role CTE and ACTE have in a number of education-related topics.
