Pulling the Pieces Together: The Doctor Is In
Richardson, Sylvia O.; Wallach, Geraldine P.
Topics in Language Disorders, v25 n4 p332-336 Oct-Dec 2005
This article presents an interview with Dr. Sylvia O. Richardson, a pediatrician, speech-language pathologist, researcher, scholar, teacher, and clinician, who has been involved in the field of language-learning disabilities for many years. Widely-published in the areas of language disorders and dyslexia, and a former President of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and the International Dyslexia Association, Dr. Richardson continues her involvement in the field by doing speaking engagements, providing consultations, organizing workshops, and serving on several task forces and panels in the areas of reading disabilities and language learning. During this interview she discusses how changes in scientists' and practitioners' understanding about the connections between language disorders and learning disabilities demonstrates how much progress has been made in this field. She also defines some misconceptions in language-learning disabilities and some obstacles to the success of beginning reading instruction.
