Mental-Health Aid for Immigrant Children Lags
Zehr, Mary Ann
Education Week, v26 n35 p1, 15 May 2007
As educators and experts assess the quality of student mental-health services in light of the deadly shootings last April 16, the Virginia Tech gunman's immigrant background is focusing attention on what immigration workers say is a lack of services tailored to such groups. Mental-health professionals say that, in general, even school districts with programs that specialize in helping students from immigrant families are hard-pressed to keep up with the demand from the nation's growing immigrant population due to overwhelming need and lack of adequate funding. There has been some progress in the development of programs that address the mental-health of immigrant students through schools, but they remain exceptions.
