Dynamic Leadership, Character Education Form New FCS Class
Watkins, Carol Ann
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v99 n1 p30-31 2007
In this article, the author describes the leadership class that she created for the family and consumer sciences (FCS) department. The class, "Family & Consumer Sciences Issues & Applications," focused on family and community action for improved quality of life. It included in-depth laboratory experiences, service learning activities, and the development of character and leadership skills. Enrollment was limited to Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) officers and leadership team members who planned, organized, and managed chapter activities. The effect this class had on the students was tremendous. They were more confident, articulate, organized, upright, outgoing, and positive. Critical thinking and problem solving skills were used every day. Many of the students applied for FCCLA scholarships, entered competitive events, or planned to run for state or local office the next year to continue their growth.
