High Schools in Limelight for Summit: Governors Are Prepared to Talk about Change

When the US' governors gather in Washington this February 2005 for what is billed as a national education summit on high schools, many will come prepared to talk about initiatives already under way back home. The summit's organizers hope that an "action agenda"--coupled with intensive planning leading up to the meeting--will encourage state leaders to leave the event ready to tackle some of the more fundamental challenges in high school improvement. The "Action Agenda for Improving America's High Schools" was set for release Feb. 22, 2005, along with data profiles for each state that pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses in helping students graduate from high school and succeed in work and college. The "Action Agenda for Improving America's High Schools" outlines strategies states can take to ensure that high schoolers graduate ready for work or college: (1) Restore value to the high school diploma; (2) Redesign high schools; (3) Give high school students the excellent teachers and principals they need; (4) Set goals, measure progress, and hold high schools and colleges accountable; and (5) Streamline and improve education governance.
