Linking the Classroom to the Community
Sedlacek, Nancy; Young, Jay A.; Acharya, Chetana; Botta, Dianne; Burbacher, Thomas M.
Science Teacher, v72 n4 p44-45 Apr 2005
This article describes the Youth Network for Healthy Communities (YNHC). YNHC is a teacher-driven project in Washington State. Through YNHC, students research environmental health issues in their communities and present their findings to other students throughout the state via videoconferencing. YNHC focuses on environmental health science in the context of technology and communication. Student groups research their projects primarily through the internet and library, but many combine original research, interviews, and site visits with their print research. Students spend four to six weeks in the research phase and plan a videoconference presentation as their culminating project. Once the research phase is complete, students and teachers reconvene over videoconference for the student presentations. The question-and-answer period at the end of each presentation offers additional learning opportunities for viewers and presenters alike. Through YNHC, students make connections between health and the environment, discover how science is an integral part of their lives, and take action for their communities' health.
