Teachers often invite guests from the community into their classrooms and organize field trips out into the community; however, this does not constitute community-based education (CBE). In CBE, students are engaged in the public domain and form partnerships to meet a community need. Premised on the notion that students are members of the community, CBE activities engage youth in authentic experiences within the public domain that result in meaningful learning experiences for students, and a product, service, or process for the community. By participating in CBE, students take part in an experience that has the potential to influence the extent and manner in which they participate as adults. In this article, the author provides examples of partnerships formed by her New York State Regents Living Environment classes as well as tips for creating a successful CBE project.
