Sharing Responsibility for Our Children: How One Community Is Making Its Vision for Children a Reality
Dickinson, Pat; Lothian, Shelley; Jonz, Mary Beth
Young Children, v62 n2 p49-55 Mar 2007
In this article, the authors describe a group of committed people called the Our Kids Network in the Regional Municipality of Halton, in Ontario, Canada, which was given the opportunity to create a positive, future-oriented vision for the children in their community, and detail how it is making its vision for children a reality. The Halton Our Kids Network is a coalition formed in 1996, a time when many initiatives to support children and families were developing. Originally focused on early childhood, the network later expanded to include two groups, a steering committee focused on children from birth through 18, as well as the original group: Our Kids--The Early Years, which continues to focus on local and provincial initiatives for children prenatal to six and families. Through collaboration, the Network is addressing gaps in services and eliminating overlaps. The authors give a description of what the Halton community has done to move toward more integrated service delivery to neighborhoods, children, and families.
