Districts Rethink Availability of Data on School Security
Cavanagh, Sean; Manzo, Kathleen Kennedy
Education Week, v24 n8 p1, 18 Oct 2004
This article reports reactions to the detention of a man in Iraq who possessed computer disks containing information about crisis planning, emergency procedures, and possibly even floor plans for several U.S. schools. The laws and issues surrounding restricted access to this information are discussed. Experts say that in most states, documents, such as emergency procedures and school floor plans, are typically available by law to anyone who requests them. However, officials say, that limiting access to certain school information is necessary, when safety concerns outweigh the publics right to know.
