The Importance of Order
Greenman, Jim
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n170 p53-55 Jul-Aug 2006
Children's places need ordered time and space that furthers the program goals while making the program a pleasant place to live and work for all those (large and small) who inhabit the program. The order provides a comforting framework that does not harshly interrupt the activities of children, instead the order allows for more experiences and for children to anticipate their day. In this article, the author discusses some guidelines for order that is comprehensible and functional for all occupants: (1) The order should be based on program goals and values; (2) The order should be understood by children as well as adults; (3) The order should be restorable by children and adults; (4) The program order should be functional, working to make life easier, better, and more productive; (5) The order should reflect changing conditions; and (6) The order should contribute to a sense of aesthetic harmony.
